Zdenko Velcic was born at Brsec, near Opatija in 1953. He began to go in for painting already in the elementary school. The painter is currently the member of the visual arts workshop - Opatija. He lives and creates in Rijeka.
Views and panoramas of towns, mostly those of seaside scenery, are the subject of Zdenko Velcic, who has differences in their appearance transformed into the sights of colouristic tension with a palette for which the basis of nearly every painting is the profusion of blue. Understandably, this is the colour that apart from the obviousness of the motive is almost symbolically connected to azure and thus reflects the spirit and breath of this Adriatic corner of the Mediterranean. His approach is based on the classical aesthetics but also he carries out the transformation whereof the aspect of impressionistic spontaneity, direct notation of beloved scenery, is brought to the threshold of painter’s acceptance. Velcic is not a guest before the theme but a frequent spectator and participant in the lively dwelling by the sea. However, this wonderful feeling of the scenery uniqueness, a certain dithyramb joy inscribed in lightning and colours of the south, which is transferred from painting to painting and does not cease even when Zagreb with its squares and streets becomes a part of his interest as a painter. The colouristic serenity of domicile is transferred to the ancient Stone Gates, Lotrscak Tower or Flowers Square. The space filled with strollers as those in Rijeka or Split promenades.
Through steadiness and quality Velcic reaffirms himself again and again as the author who is ranged among the most interesting contemporary Croatian landscape painters.
